July 15, 2024 - Scott, Doug, Rob, Stan, Rich, Sharon, and Lourdes visited TCH in Tempe today. Dawn and Heather gave a presentation on TCH and a tour of the Tempe facility. TCH owns 5 group homes in Tempe and provides day time support for adults with developmental or physical disabilities. TCH also provides contract services to military bases across Arizona. We toured their secure document destruction division and as well as the TCH grounds.
If you are a busy person who wants to have fun while making a difference, then be our guest for lunch on Monday (not holidays) from 12:00 to 1:00 pm at the Olive Garden. July 8, 2024 - At today's meeting of the Kyrene Rotary Club, new member Stan was inducted by President Dave, and Rich received a Paul Harris Rotary Pin from Dave for his generous donation. We welcome our new member and express our thanks to Rich for his generosity.
October 9, 2023 - Dawn Hocking, Director of Development for The Centers for Habilitation (TCH), gave us an update on the status of her organization. Our club also presented her with a $6,500 check in support of their programs.
The TCH mission statement is:
At TCH, we support some of the most vulnerable people in Arizona. We ensure the more than 23% of Arizona adults with developmental or physical disabilities have the support and opportunities they need to live life to the fullest. From helping adults with disabilities develop critical life skills to guiding them through career training with the goal of independent employment, we offer Arizonians with disabilities the tools they need to make their own choices, improve their abilities and gain control of their lives.
May 20, 2024 - Club Member Andy Wangstad receives a Rotary Pin, from President Dave, for his financial contributions to Rotary International. Kudos to Andy for this continued significant support of Rotary and contributions of time and effort to our club.
Several members and a couple guests of the KRC visited AZStRUT and Stardust on Tuesday, April 30. Most of the group met afterwards for lunch at Ted's Hot Dogs just down Broadway from the 2 organizations.
AZStRUT is a 501c3 non-profit that supports Az technical education as well as community efforts towards a more sustainable future. They accept used electronics and reuse, recycle, or divert as much as possible. The effort started with help from Intel and Motorola. Current efforts include a technology camp that concludes with donation of 1500 laptops to a Phoenix area school.
Stardust is a material reuse non-profit with the goal of “starving the landfill.” They accept working donate appliances as well as having several “deconstruction teams” to reclaim materials from homes. There was a broad range of home improvement materials ranging from wine coolers to doors to fireplaces to cabinets; well organized, at good prices.
April 08, 2024 - Jennifer Adams (Tempe Vice Mayor) and Brooke St. George visited the club and got a surprise. Dave and Lourdes brought eclipse glasses and shared with visitors and Olive Garden staff. Jennifer reviewed the Safety Corridor program that Tempe has deployed. The primary focus is to reduce late night drag racing. It involves cameras and coordination with the neighboring cities of Mesa and Phoenix. Police are identifying drag racers and tracking them for later arrest. No high speed pursuit is planned. They are also using surveillance at gathering places like Circle K's to disperse crowds before they form. Tempe as well as most Valley police forces are understaffed so they are trying to avoid crowd control activities. The program has been active for several months, and they are preparing initial reports to determine its effectiveness.
