AWIM Awards

March 5, 2019 - Today was the last day of the 8 week AWIM (A World in Motion) project at Kyrene del Pueblo Middle School. Kyrene Club members and friends mentored 8 teams who competed for Car designs and performance, presentations, and overall team participation.
First Place - Gold Award went to the Pink Party team which was mentored by Skip Pollock

Second Place - Silver Award went to the Speedy Sharks team which was mentored by Jim Durham

Third Place - Bronze Award went to the Speeding Cheetah Sloths team which was mentored by Doug Bock.
The entire 8 week project was very successful - selecting winners was difficult.  The students and mentors learned a lot and had fun throughout the project. Science teacher, Brandon Gritz did a phenomenal job at organizing and directing the project.  Kudos to Brandon!  A slide show of activities is available at our Photo Gallery - click here

Boys & Girls Club Youth of Year Candidate
February 25, 2019 - Today Christian Huerra gave us a test presentation that he will use to compete in the Youth of the Year competition at the end of this week.
He is already a well-respected finalist with the Boys and Girls Club organization. His 3 minute speech focused on diversity, the pros and cons. He emphasized that the Boys and Girls club provided him with an alternate family that did not include drugs, gangs, 0r guns. He has found that the Keystone club has provided him with a way to give back to the community and hone his leadership skills.  Christian did an excellent job and we all wish him well in the competition.

Building Doors for Boys and Girls Club
February 20, 2019 - Blue doors are a symbol of the Boys & Girls Clubs.  Late last week Harry was asked to quickly organize a KRC project to make 11 Boys & Girls Club "Doors on Wheels".  The unusual portable doors would be used for B&G ceremonies and to promote their clubs in local communities.  Harry immediately emailed KRC members for help and arranged to meet the B&G club volunteer at Lowes to pull the needed materials.   KRC members Bill and Darrell volunteered immediately and the three of them began building the project Monday morning.  Prospective KRC member Rob Savana joined in on Tuesday, and all four KRC volunteers completed the project on Wednesday.  The four volunteers donated about 47 hours of work to the project.  See the picture of some of the completed doors ready for paint.    Well done Rotarians!

Child Protective Services
February 18, 2019 - Danny Abril is an attorney practicing juvenile law in Maricopa county since 2006.  Danny explained the process involved in dependency cases. People involved with children, such as teachers and doctors are mandatory reporters if they suspect child abuse. Removing a child from a home can be complicated depending on the severity of the abuse. The ultimate goal is to return children to their families when it is deemed safe to do so. Danny's presentation led to many questions as club members learned about the "system" that children are exposed to.
