MAGGIE'S PLACE

October 10, 2022 - Whitney Thistle, the Philanthropy Director of Maggie's Place, gave us an excellent overview of the organization which provides shelter for pregnant homeless women. They have several facilities around the valley and their Mission states that "Maggie’s Place welcomes pregnant and parenting women and their children into a safe and loving community, providing life-changing programs and ongoing services to help them to become self-sufficient." AmeriCorps members serve as 24/7 hour support at the Maggie’s Place homes. More than 1,100 moms and 650 babies have called Maggie’s Place home since it began is 2000. They have a thrift shop to help raise funds and are always looking for volunteers in a number of capacities. Whitney's presentation generated many questions.  Interested readers should check out their web site. Our club donated $100 to help support their efforts.

PICKLEBALL - KEN POLLOCK
October 3, 2022 - Ken Pollock, Webmaster for the Kyrene Rotary Club, shared his Pickleball Perspectives with the club. He told us about the size and growth of Pickleball in the USA - 5 million players, average age 38, youngest  7, oldest 90. He described the court (1/4 of tennis court), the basic rules of play, explained the differences in paddles, and why the sport is growing so rapidly. He began to play in March of this year and has found the game to be fun, provide conditioning, and provide many new friendships.  Interested in playing? Check out the Ahwatukee Recreation Center (ARC). Ken challenged members to try something new in their lives to increase excitement, learning, and friendships. His presentation can be seen HERE
CLUB ASSEMBLY
September 26, 2022 - Our regular club assembly focused on our 2023 Golf Tournament. There was considerable discussion about how to get sponsors and golfers as well as who had responsibility for major activities. Tyler is the chairman of the Golf Committee and was quite optimistic. Tyler is setting up a weekly Zoom meeting every Thursday morning at 8:30 a.m.  The meetings will be short but will focus on what needs to be accomplished in the coming week in order to stay on track for having a successful tournament.  All club members are welcomed, and encouraged to participate in these meetings. Tyler will be sending out a link so members can sign in.
DG - 5495 - LARRY HORTON'S VISIT

September 19, 2019 - District Governor for 5495 visited our club to give us his vision for Rotary. Larry would like to see our District increase female participation to 35%. He mentioned the new 7th focus for Rotary - The Environment and was optimistic that we could contribute significantly. He discussed the ongoing problem with the aging of members but believes we can change that.  He told us that the Tucson Verde club has 45 members who are all under 50!  Larry mentioned the importance of eliminating Polio completely - we are almost there. There is District Pints for Polio on October 24 (World Polio Day) to help support this effort.  Check the website.
Larry believes that Retention is the most important membership focus now. We should invite potential members to participate in our service projects (rather than just coming to meetings)
His powerpoints can be seen by clicking HERE.
The first photo shows Larry giving president Soni a banner that emphasizes Imagine Rotary. The second photo shows President Soni presenting Larry with a "club autographed" Dr Seus book.
There was great dialog and humor throughout the meeting and the Board Meeting which followed.
Thank you for the visit, Larry.
