Nov 27, 2017 - Tracey Hickey, from the Foster Care and Adoption organization - part of Catholic Charities - gave us a good overview of her organization. Tracey raised 5 kids then decided she needed to give back to the community and joined this foster care organization. She told us there are over 19,000 children in foster care in Arizona and the need for foster parents is acute. Her organization is responsible for training foster parents and helping them navigate the state's bureaucratic system. A large number of foster care parents are "kinship families" but they still need considerable help. One of the key goals of her operation is to ensure that foster parents recognize that children in the system need a lot of help with trauma. Her presentation generated a lot of discussion.

She told us about her experience in discovering and using the harp within the general sphere of integrative medicine. Her friend, Robert Callan, has been modeling the neuroplasticity of the brain to demonstrate how effective music can be in healing brain trauma. Joyce and Robert's efforts are at the forefront of the application of harp music to improve lives. Joyce's work is sponsored by many hospitals and clinics in the Phoenix area.
