May 5, 2017 - Movies in the park began another spring season. Club members worked hard at the booth selling snacks, soft drinks, and glow sticks.  Funds from this event are used to provide dictionaries to 3rd graders in the Roosevelt School district.  May 1, 2017 - Dan Wilson from Usery Mountain Regional Park gave us a great overview of this particular park as well as the entire Maricopa County Regional Park system. The Maricopa County park system is one of the largest in the country, containing over 120,000 acres and experiencing more than 2 million visitors a year. The parks receive only 7% of their budget from the county - the remainder comes from visitor fees. The parks are very well maintained and offer a wide variety of programs. The operation of the parks is supported by a very large number of volunteers: some stay on-site all winter, some support specific operations like visitor centers and some help with specific events.  Our club has many hikers and the discussion was lively.  Usery Mountain park is a particular favorite of many members.

 April 23, 2017 - Marni Anbar described the activities of the current (class 32) of Tempe Leadership. This class has two projects - (1) fund the improvement of the swamp coolers at the United Food Bank warehouse and (2) fund the weekend backpack program for Thew Elementary School. The class goal is to raise $56,000 for both projects and they are within $5,000 of that goal.  Interested readers can donate  here.

Marni also told us about the Discovery Room that a group of parents have established at two elementary schools in the Kyrene School District. (Kyrene del Cielo and Kyrene del Colina). These rooms are school-based Science and Engineering playrooms for K-5 students. The rooms are open during lunch hours/recess and volunteers are needed to help in these rooms.  Contact Marni at marnib02@gmail.com if you are interested in helping with this very creative endeavor.

 The AWIM project at Kyrene del Pueblo Middle School is now in the second session of the year. The current session will end on May 06 when awards for the best 3 teams will be given out.  Bill Klein and Brandon Gritz provided the instruction and AWIM Volunteers (Kyrene Rotary Club members and spouses)  provided the mentoring.  You can see a gallery of photos by clicking here.
