March 16, 2015 - Tonya Gray and Christine Hudson, participants in the Tempe Leadership XXX class, gave us an overview of the project selected by this class. This program is funded by the Foundation of the Tempe Chamber of Commerce which encourages each class to initiate a project that emphasizes giving something back to the community. This class (XXX) has decided to develop, build, and fund a bike corral at Tempe Beach Park. Tonya and Christine gave us a quick quiz to see how knowledgeable we were about bikes and Tempe Beach Park. Their presentation described the project in considerable detail. We all agreed that the project is quite impressive and worthy of support. March 14, 2015 - The clubs in Tempe joined together to sponsor a picnic in the park at the SRP PERA club on Sat 3/14. (Pi day by the way)They were inspired by Rotary International President, Gary Huang’s call for clubs to hold a Rotary Day event. Community and connections were the themes. Everyone had fun playing games, talking to new and old friends, and enjoying a beautiful spring day. Games for the kids were available, a firetruck made an appearance and Tempe councilman, Kolby Granville, stopped by to talk. Rotaractors turned out as well as DG John Pennypacker and DG Elect Sherry Maschel.Thanks go to Randy Clawson of the Tempe Downtown club for leading the team to organize the event.
March 02, 2015 Terry Lubsen, District Microcredit Chairman gave us an excellent presentation about the microcredit program in Mexico and the newest project in Hermasillo. He began with a video which illustrated just how poor most of the world is, and how we can help people living in poverty conditions by helping them to help themselves. This is the basis of microcredit. Microcredit programs have been operating for several years in many countries. For the past few years Rotary International and our district have been working with Rotary Clubs in Mexico to help people in Nogales and Hermasillo. Terry gave us several success stories and encouraged us to contribute to the program both individually and as a club. It was uplifting to learn how successful the Rotary microcredit program has been in these communities in Mexico.
