 Oct 3, 2016 - The District Governor for 5510, Dr. Tonya Watson, visited our club today. We spent the first 90 minutes reviewing all aspects of our club with her. Tonya then gave us a multi-faceted presentation that included such issues as "Why do we need a district office"; "Why are we combining districts"; "What does Rotary do for the community"; and "What can we be doing better". Tonya encouraged us to take some action to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Rotary Foundation. She would also like clubs to get involved with some form of "Assisted Elder Campaign" for this year. She emphasized we should answer the questions Why Rotary? Why Now? Let's promote Rotary more aggressively (toot our horns) to help recruit members. She concluded her presentation with the mantra - " We should be proud to be Rotarians"

September 26, 2016 - Today Don Kelly from the Tempe South Rotary Club talked to us about the struggle that lower income students have to succeed. He told us of his own experience as a lower income student and the techniques he had to learn. He became a "purpose-driven student" who was then successful and became a purpose-driven professor at ASU. Don related several stories about how he engaged students to make them successful. He told us that he has persuaded his club to fund a scholarship for summer classes for 5 students who could use the extra help. He would like our club to provide a similar opportunity for 5 students at a cost of about $1700. We agreed to look into this further in our next couple of meetings. Don is writing a book on how to improve graduation rates for low-income students and will donate proceeds from sales to the scholarship program.
September 24, 2016 - Thirty-five volunteers from several East Valley clubs participated in this quarterly multi-club project. Today we sorted and packed more than 10,000 pounds of food. This means that each volunteer helped provide over 250 meals for needy families in the Valley. Our Kyrene club had a good turnout of members and family. We look forward to the next project in mid-December.
