Packing food - United Food Bank
Dec 10, 2016 - Forty-five volunteers from several East Valley clubs participated in this quarterly multi-club project. Today we sorted and packed more than 15,000 pounds of food.  This means that each volunteer helped provide about 250 meals for needy families in the Valley.  Our Kyrene club had a good turnout of members and family.  We look forward to the next project in mid-March.

Navajo Water Project
Dec 5, 2016 - Curt Ward from the Gilbert Rotary Club told us about the water project on the Navajo reservation that his club is supporting. The objective of the project is to provide water to the homes of families who have no indoor water. A 2000-foot well has been drilled and now each home must be outfitted with the proper hardware systems, at a cost of $4500 each.  This is an international project - Mexican rotary clubs have already raised 30% of the total $78,000 cost.  The Gilbert club is asking other clubs to help raise another $5000 to meet the overall goal. Our club will explore ways to participate and make a decision within the next few weeks.
Awards Evening
Dec 4, 2016 - After dinner and wrapping of presents, Doug gave three awards. The first was to Dave for his year as President last year.  The second was to Rob for his outstanding job as Secretary/Treasurer. The third was the Rotarian of the Year award to Ken for his contributions to the club over the past year.

Christmas Wrapping Potluck
Dec 4, 2016 -- Members gathered at Doug and Pat's  home for an evening of dinner, present wrapping, games, and fellowship.  We brought and wrapped Christmas presents for a family with needy children.  Kelly selected the family from the Kyrene School District Foundation's list of families in need.  Thanks to all!!  This is an annual event that club members vigorously support and enjoy.

PolioPlus - End Polio Now
Nov 28, 2016 - Rod Daniels, chair of District 5510's "PolioPlus Campaign to End Polio Now" gave us a status check on the project. Rod told us that there are several partners working with Rotary on this project. Since its launch in 1988, the GlobalPolio Eradication Initiative - spearheaded by the World Health Organization (WHO), RotaryInternational, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and UNICEF - has reduced the incidence of polio by more than 99 percent. The original goal was to have complete eradication by 2018 but that won't be reached because of 4 cases in Nigeria this year.  An area or country cannot be declared as polio-free until 3 years have passed with no new cases. He explained the 5 major advantages to eliminating polio, why we should care, and why we should contribute to the project (which we did).
