June 10, 2017 - Many volunteers from several East Valley clubs participated in this quarterly multi-club project. 23 volunteers packed 5,767 lbs of food, enough for 4,805 meals. Including family and friends KRC had 9 there. This was our 7th quarterly food packing event at the United Food Bank.   We look forward to the next project in mid-September

Gardening in Arizona
June 5, 2017 - Doreen Pollack, Master Gardener, explained what "Master Gardener" meant and then gave us valuable information about plants and vegetation in Maricopa County.  A good reference to use is the Arizona Municipal Water Users Association. She explained that the 3 major elements to consider are soil, watering, and timing. Because the soil in this area is mostly clay it is important to modify the soil by adding "ammendments" which are basically organic matter.
For potted plants and raised beds care must be taken to eliminate or reduce salt build up. Watering should be long enough to encourage root growth: 2 feet depth for shrubs and 3 feet for trees. Doreen also gave us general guidelines for when to plant various species.  She suggested looking on Facebook to get answers from various gardening groups.

Women's Hockey & SmileTrain
May 22, 2017 - Lyndsey Fry spoke of her trip to the Olympics. She played with the boys at first as there was no hockey for girls, and that was great. At that age, girls are bigger and she was aggressive! In high school she ended up taking on-line courses as the commuted to Denver to be on a team. Her college career was at Harvard and that was where the crisis occurred. She had to decide if she was really going to do what she had to do… and she did, making it on the Olympic team that went to Sochi and won a Silver Medal.  Today she does marathons and Ironman competitions. But to create something bigger than just herself, she aligned with Smile Train, and organization that raises funds to send dentists to third world countries to do dental work and perform operations like cleft palate - to bring back someone’s smile. If you would like to donate to Lyndsey's current Smile Train project, click here.
