May 7, 2018 - Today, Chuck Backus, owner of the Quarter Circle U Ranch (located in the Superstition Mountains) told us what it was like to be a rancher in Arizona. Chuck, a PhD nuclear engineer by training, began ranching over 40 years ago while he was an active administrator at Arizona State University. He brings a strong analytical approach to ranching and has been very successful. He explained that private land represents only 17% of Arizona so ranchers lease land from the government. Chuck gave us a superb overview of the cattle industry - from calves to packing house. He said that ranching in Arizona is far different than in the midwest. For example, in the midwest farmers have up to 2000 cows per acre while in Arizona a typical density is 100 acres per cow. His talk was fascinating and generated many questions and much discussion.
