November 3, 2014 - Sunday Etukeren, born in Nigeria, gave us a broad picture of Nigerian history and current status. Sunday came to the US many years ago and has raised a very successful family here. He has been associated with the Chandler Rotary club for many years. He told us that the British controlled Nigeria from 1700 to 1960 but was not united. It was created as a single country in 1914 but was ungovernable, having 600 languages and 1000 dialects.
Boku Haram began in the late 70's and you can follow the development from the link shown. They are anti-western and want Nigeria to become a Muslim caliphate. They are trained by Al Quaida in Yemen. The U.S. has a covert interest because of the "sweet oil" available in Nigeria. Sunday is optimistic that the country will settle down and he hopes to build a school there. We wish him well.
