Jan 31 - Whitney Renaud described ICAN's Mission as to provide free, comprehensive out of school time programs that empower youth to be productive, self-confident, and responsible citizens.   ICAN programs address critical community issues in the Chandler Redevelopment Area including:
  • Youth Substance Abuse: The 85225 zip code, ICAN's primary service population, was ranked the 4th highest at-risk zip code in Maricopa County for substance abuse
  • Poverty: Eight out of 10 kids in the Chandler Redevelopment Area live in a household earning less than $25,000 annually; Five of them are earning less than $10,000.
  • Gang Violence and Juvenile Delinquency: 8 rival gangs exist within the Redevelopment area.
  • Education: Four out of 10 of the population we serve over 25 have not graduated high school, and have not received a GED.
  • Health and Nutrition: Arizona has the second highest rate of childhood obesity in the nation with Hispanic and minority youth making up the largest percent of the obese children in Arizona.
  • Family Support: Four out of every 10 of the families that ICAN serves are single parent households.
ICAN is currently serving 180 Chandler area youth.
